We want to begin by thanking all of you for the supportive emails, Instagram tags, comments, and DM’s that we’ve received over the past few weeks. Knowing that we’re part of such an amazing community is what keeps us going, and it’s truly hard to put our appreciation into words.
As you may be aware, Governor Northam issued an Executive Order this week that, among other measures, extended the closure of all gyms in Virginia until April 24th. This means that Sportrock will remain closed until at least that date. As always, we will continue to confer with experts and seek guidance from federal and local authorities and will communicate any further information regarding our status as soon as we have it. In the meantime, we need your help. The Climbing Wall Association (CWA), an organization for climbing gym owners and operators, has written a letter to Congress requesting the inclusion of climbing gyms in emergency stimulus funding. Please consider signing the petition to show your support of climbing gyms and of Sportrock.
While our doors remained closed, we are trying to launch as many new ways to stay connected as we can. It’s been amazing to see everyone who has joined us for online yoga and fitness classes, and we are looking to increase those offerings in the coming days and weeks. We will be auctioning off lessons with our Directors – both future lessons once we re-open, and video lessons to keep you active during the shutdown! We’ve also added lots of Sportrock gear to our online store, which will be shipped directly to you (with strong sanitary precautions during packaging). Show your support and look fashionable! Finally, we are offering the opportunity to pre-purchase classes at a discount. Go to the Classes Page to register or for more info.
For Recurring Members:
Your support is what makes it possible for a small, locally-owned business like Sportrock to keep its doors open. We are incredibly grateful for all the messages of support we’ve received and also recognize the extreme financial hardship this crisis places on many of you. As such, we are offering 3 options for how you would like to proceed with your membership.
If you read our last two updates, nothing has changed: all accounts will be frozen on April 1st, unless you have already contacted us to request otherwise. If you prefer to change the option you chose, or make any other changes to your Sportrock account, you must email [email protected] before midnight on March 31, 2020. Please read below for a full list of membership options.
1) We have waived all freeze fees, so your membership will be frozen and a pro-rated credit for the time we are closed will be applied to your Sportrock account. Upon re-opening, your membership will automatically be reactivated unless you request otherwise. If you do not contact us, we will automatically choose Option 1.
2) You may also choose to receive that same pro-rated amount as a credit towards a future class, outdoor trip, or another program – this will help support Sportrock while ensuring you get full value. Please email [email protected] to choose Option 2.
3) In a gesture of incredible kindness and in support of a small business, some members have already offered to continue to pay dues even without climbing at Sportrock. We have no expectation that anyone would choose this option, and recognize it is not possible for many, but based on numerous emails offering to do so, we are giving members this choice. We’re truly humbled by your generosity and support. All funds received in this way will be directly used to support employment for staff most affected by the closure. Please email [email protected] to choose Option 3.
For Prepaid Members:
We will extend the expiration date of all Prepaid memberships to credit you for the days we are closed. No action is required for Prepaid members.
For Classes and Programs:
If you were signed up for a cancelled class, you should have already received an email concerning your booking. If you have any further questions, please email us.
For Junior Team:
Junior Team is postponed indefinitely to align with our updated gym closure. We will be extending the season by two weeks into the summer to account for missed practices in March. As long as we are able, we will be running remote practices for the S2, S3, and S4 Teams. If you have any further questions, please email us.
In good health,
Your Sportrock Team

We are a rock climbing gym built by climbers, for climbers.
Did you know Sportrock is one of the founding rock climbing gyms in the country?
We are proud of the distinction and grateful to still be around 26 years after opening the FIRST commercial climbing gym in the DC metro area!
